The Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is one of the most significant expansion projects of the American Museum of Natural History in over 20 years, and opened to the public on May 4th. This central project designed by Studio Gang, led by Jeanne Gang, marks the largest public project of the firm to date.

The Gilder Center covers an area of 230000 square feet and costs $465 million to introduce new exhibition, education, collection, and research spaces to the museum. It also brings important functions that were previously placed behind the scenes to the public for the first time, allowing visitors to gain new insights into the museum's rich collection and active scientific research.

Studio Gang的设计遵循了由内而外的逻辑，通过设置连续的通道将拥有150年历史的既有建筑连接起来，极大地改善了整个博物馆园区的功能性和游览体验。中心项目还引入了一个全新的无障碍入口，创造了一条强有力的东西向轴线，并在10座不同的建筑之间建立了30多个连接点，用连续的环路取代了曾经闭塞的路径。

The design of Studio Gang follows an inside out logic, connecting existing buildings with a history of 150 years through continuous channels, greatly improving the functionality and visitor experience of the entire museum campus. The central project also introduced a new accessible entrance, creating a strong east-west axis and establishing over 30 connection points between 10 different buildings, replacing previously blocked paths with continuous loops.

The structure of the atrium opens up the building to natural light, bringing attractive views to different spaces and building a physical connection bridge between them.

Starting from the atrium, visitors can easily find and enter the surrounding functional spaces that showcase the museum's mission in science and education, and connect visitors with the process of scientific validation. The newly added exhibition spaces include insect galleries, butterfly galleries, collection centers, and an immersive space called 'Invisible World', showcasing how all life on Earth is interconnected. In addition, the center also has a library, classrooms, learning laboratories, and educational areas aimed at providing services for different groups.

The opening of the Gild Center marks an important step for the museum in improving public scientific literacy, while also showcasing the museum's mission to visitors and stimulating their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. This building, surrounded by a park, maintains a high degree of consistency with the existing museum buildings on both sides, adopting a smooth and soft curved shape, and using the same stone as the western entrance area of Central Park, forming a visual connection.
