This urban public space installation called Catalyst Cube is a collaboration between the British Council for Culture and Education, British architects, and Caracas, Venezuela. This project lasted for a year and aims to create an inspiring and communicative urban public space.
The design inspiration for the Catalyst Cube device comes from the "catalyst" in its name, which means it can stimulate vitality and creativity in the city. This device is designed as a multifunctional space that can host various cultural, artistic, and educational activities, thereby promoting community participation and communication.
Through this project, the British Council for Culture and Education and architects hope to provide a gathering place for urban residents to share ideas, showcase creativity, and establish closer community connections. The Catalyst Cube, jointly designed by Will Sandy and Incursions, is a small prefabricated structure designed to provide informal public gathering spaces for people. This mobile and multifunctional cube space is designed to facilitate communication between society, culture, and education, providing people with a real-time community gathering place.
The inspiration for the Catalyst Cube comes from the concept of catalysts, which means it can stimulate vitality and creativity in the city. This device can be moved to different locations in the city, providing residents with a platform to share ideas, showcase creativity, and establish community connections. The Catalyst Cube device, as a tool, aims to stimulate the desire of citizens to participate in future permanent design and urban environmental design. The Catalyst Cube device is composed of steel structure, metal plates, and wood, making assembly, use, and disassembly very simple and convenient. It can be transported to the site in finished condition, or several prefabricated components can be transported to the site for immediate installation. This design approach minimizes the impact on the environment to the greatest extent possible while activating urban space.
This device has strong stability and attractiveness and will be placed in the community for three months. Its adaptability and flexibility provide space for various unexpected uses, providing a clear framework for people, and also leaving room for creating unexpected usage scenarios.

The Catalyst Cube device was officially unveiled in November 2019, providing a venue for a series of cultural activation activities. These activities include theater performances, puppetry performances, music performances, study sessions, public speeches, exhibitions, 3D video mapping, disability day activities, and other seasonal activities during festivals. By providing venues for these diverse activities, the device promotes the exchange and development of community culture.
