11-11

Starting from November 10, 2024, the HEM will present Bosco Sodi's largest solo exhibition "Beyond the Wilderness" held in Asia to date. The exhibition is jointly planned by the art museum and the artist, showcasing over a hundred works by the artist, including paintings, sculptures, and site-specific installations. The exhibition places Soddy's works inside and outside the art museum building, reinterpreting the artist's creative philosophy of using natural wilderness as a source of inspiration through the interaction of region, space, and works, and elevating natural materials through the intervention of the body.

Bosco Sodi was born in Mexico City in 1970 and has since lived in Paris, Barcelona, and Japan. He currently works and lives in New York and Oaxaca, Mexico. Soddy's works use sawdust, clay, and volcanic rock as materials to excavate natural energy from the roughness and primitiveness of natural substances. His large monochrome sawdust paintings and clay sculptures are created solely with his hands, without using any tools. The body in creation thus becomes a conductor between material and spirit, injecting spiritual charm into ordinary matter. In recent practice, artists have directly glazed volcanic rocks and clay sculptures with vivid colors or pure gold, presenting a color that does not exist in nature to the heavy natural materials, like the stone tablets of ancient Maya civilization, showing divinity beyond time.

In addition, the wabi sabi aesthetic, which advocates the beauty of flaws, has had a profound influence on Sodi's creative philosophy. The randomness and traces left by time in the creative process have therefore become an extremely important component of his works. Sodi's clay sculptures are mostly made in his studio in Oaxaca, Mexico, in collaboration with local craftsmen. They are handcrafted by mixing soil with water and sand, and then fired in a traditional way after natural drying in the sun. Each sculpture has a unique texture and crevice, and blends with the surrounding environment over time.

Inspired by this, the artist will present a set of site-specific installations fired in the Nanfeng Ancient Stove, the oldest existing dragon kiln in Foshan, in this exhibition. The Nanfeng Ancient Kiln was first built during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty and is one of the oldest surviving and still in use firewood kilns in the world. The device is composed of thousands of bricks fired from local rough clay. The natural ash and variable temperature generated during the wood burning process result in each brick producing different colors, textures, and glazes. The harmonious yet random interaction between manual craftsmanship and natural materials echoes Soddy's creative philosophy.

Autumn rain falls and the sunlight changes. In the remote wilderness of the He Art Museum, Sodi's works are placed inside and outside the minimalist architectural space designed by Tadao Ando, like wordless monuments, firmly commemorating the coexistence of the earth and humanity for over a thousand years.
